Art Fundraiser

As part of the ongoing collaboration between The Hills and Southern Lakes Sanctuary, Ann Christine Lady Hill and Dr Maryanne Marlow are proud to present the following artworks to support the ongoing conservation work of the Southern Lakes Sanctuary.

Ann Christine Lady Hill

Ann Christine Lady Hill

Art and creativity have always been central to Christine’s life.

Born in Yorkshire, her journey began at the Sheffield College of Art where she immersed herself in the creative world for five years. Following this, she earned a teaching diploma that enabled her to share her passion for art with students at various high schools in England.

In 1964, Christine embarked on a new adventure by emigrating to New Zealand, where she took the role of art teacher at Whangarei Girls High School. This experience deepened her connection with art and education, allowing her to inspire the next generation of artists.

In 1979 she played a pivotal role in conceptualising the design of the Michael Hill Jewellery Stores, alongside developing her own unique jewellery collections.

Her artistic vision is rooted in the belief of seeing the world through a different lens.

Through her paintings, she captures unexpected and unusual perspectives, inviting viewers to explore beyond the ordinary.

Maryanne Marlow

Dr Maryanne Marlow

Maryanne is an artist based in Arrowtown. She began painting in earnest after retiring from medical practice in the year 2000. She returned to school to study painting and has tried various mediums settling on oils as her preference.

Her original interest was working on figure painting and realism but she is now pursuing abstract expressionism.

Maryanne has exhibited both locally and throughout New Zealand most notably in the NZ Art Show, Renew Art Exhibition in 2020 and The Craigs Aspiring Artist finals in 2024 Her works are held in collections in New Zealand and internationally.

The subject in this series is water energy. Maryanne has taken inspiration from a trip to Ireland where she found the raw energy of the sea interacting with coastline compelled her to paint.

In these works, she applies paint in multiple transparent layers to achieve her desired effect. She uses squeegees and palate knives to inscribe the paint into thin films or fine lines of colour to depict the sea’s continual movement, crests and troughs. Her work is then punctuated with carefully positioned slashes or splotches indicating the energy release as waves meet coast. There is deep yet transparent colour which she believes evokes the feeling of the force dwelling in the sea.

Artworks

All pieces are original, one-off works of art created by two accomplished artists from Arrowtown. Thanks to the wonderful generosity and creative talents of Christine and Maryanne, all proceeds will go to the Southern Lakes Sanctuary.

The artists would like to thank Paul Rae, for his photography of the works, and Pauline Bianchi of Artbay, for her advice.
