Kārearea / New Zealand falcon

Falco novaeseelandiae

Threatened - Nationally Vulnerable

Swift, fierce and expertly adapted to Aotearoa’s diverse landscapes, the New Zealand falcon, or kārearea, is our native bird of prey and a true aerial hunter. Known for its incredible speed and agility, this falcon soars through forests and open country alike, playing a vital role in keeping ecosystems balanced.

Quick Facts:

  • Kārearea can dive at speeds over 100 km/h to catch birds and insects mid-flight.
  • They are highly territorial and fiercely defend their nesting sites against intruders.
  • Unlike many falcons worldwide, kārearea often hunt in dense native forests as well as open areas.
  • Their distinctive “ki-ki-ki” call echoes through valleys, especially during breeding season.

Protecting kārearea means preserving healthy habitats and reducing threats from habitat loss and introduced predators – ensuring these incredible hunters continue to rule the skies.
